Experience the unique archipelagos of Sweden
With a whopping 267570, Sweden has the highest number of islands out of any nation. It makes for a truly unique landscape, and both Sweden’s western and eastern coasts are famed for their beautiful archipelagos. Most of them are uninhabited but many of the larger ones can be visited by car or ferry, making for excellent day trips.
In fact, the two biggest cities are partially built upon islands. Stockholm spreads out across 14 connected islands and one of the most well-known parts of Gothenburg, Hissingen, is actually the 4th largest island in the country. Taking a day trip to explore at least one of Sweden’s archipelagos is pretty much a must for anyone visiting the Swedish coast.
Amongst the many archipelagos, there are some great options for nature lovers such as Väderöarna and the Koster Islands. The name Väderöarna translates into the Weather Islands which is fitting since the islands are both the warmest and the windiest of all of Sweden. The Koster Islands are located in the middle of Kosterhavets National Park, the first marine national park in the country. It’s home to Sweden’s largest seal colony, and a plethora of seabirds and marine animals.

Western Sweden has always been my home and I have explored its coastline since I was a child.
